Every one of us has the right to interpret languages just to know what is written/spoken from any facts. But concerning the word of God, it requires scripture to interpret scripture. In this study, we are going to interpret the term “HIS LIGHTNING” from the few passages quoted below.
Now, let’s take a look at the word “lightning”, according to strong Hebrew and Greek dictionary:
In the Old Testament Prophecy:
Lightning - translated from the Hebrew word as the following:
1."Ore” – a luminary in every sense, or the enlightenment.
2.“baw-rawk” - a flashing sword
When Job heard the voice and sound of God, his heart trembled and was moved out of his place. In this situation, Job might die at that very moment if we will use our wisdom in this sense. When we read all passages concerning God’s revelation to men, it always appears with lightning and thunder as His great voice and sound which men cannot comprehend. Are these things figurative in meaning or really of high voltage lightning from heaven with thunder?
If we try to use the term "bawrawk" as a flashing sword, it appears that there is a relation of this term with the New Testament texts. If this lightning is the same as the flashing sword of God that will cause tremble to men’s hearts, then it is also the word of the spirit as written in Ephesians.
Job said that his lightning will strike unto the ends of the earth: “He directeth it under the whole heaven, and his lightning unto the ends of the earth “. Now, it becomes his sword/word that went into the earth. We can read a clearer context re: this in Romans: “So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. 18 But I say, Have they not heard? Yes verily, their sound went into all the earth, and their words unto the ends of the world. Rom 10:17-18.” So it is his word that will spread unto the ends of the earth as his lightning or his sword that will shine and enlighten (a specific people) and that when they saw; it caused them to tremble “His lightnings enlightened the world: the earth saw, and trembled. Psalms 97:4”. Yes, they will tremble not because of the literal light but because of the message.
Touching the Revelation of Christ figuratively, He uses also the term “sword” as His word to fight against them in His coming, “Repent; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will fight against them with the sword of my mouth.”Revelation 2:16, when we compare this phrase to Ephesians six passage again, they are the same in context “the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God: Ephesians 6:17”.
Therefore, “His lightning” is a sharp flashing sword, a sharp word that proceeded out of His mouth to rule them with his wrath taking vengeance unto the nation, Israel.
And how about the lightning in the New Testament?
In the New testament Prophecy:
Lighting - refers to one and the same meaning of Greek word “as-trap-say” as “bright shining”.
Here, the phrase “HIS LIGHTNING” from the Old Testament becomes “AS LIGHTNING or LIKE LIGHTNING” in the New Testament. Notice here in the passages of Matthew and Luke, it concerns the coming of Christ with vengeance and wrath. And they figure it out of what it looks like. The lightning here is not anymore a subject of which to be revealed but is a countenance of the coming Christ. When we connect this context to the Old Testament’s meaning, the result will be “His lightning/His sword/His word/His Christ / will come like lightnings.” It shows how Christ comes on earth.
This is the figure of Christ’s second coming as lightning from heaven. The apostles said, he will come as “LIGHTNING”, which is translated as “BRIGHT SHINING”. When we go back to the Old Testament context, His lightning or his word causes the earth to tremble as it is written in the book of Psalms “His lightnings enlightened the world: the earth saw, and trembled.” Why? It is because this lightning from heaven which is the coming Christ brings judgment, like lightning that will destroy the earth. It is the wrath of God that shall be revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of the nation, Israel who denied the Father, killed the prophets and saints, and believed not the Son of God which is Jesus Christ.
In the New Testament Fulfillment:
These are now the passages of Christ’s appearing on earth of which Israel cannot comprehend because of great power like lightnings from the sky that destruct the earth. These are the thunders of Jewish and Romans war that creates lightnings and burn the City like in Sodom and Gomorrha, as prophesied.
Now, this was the fact of His lightnings happened in first century, after Jesus died.

"The Jewish and Romans war - the siege in Jerusalem"
NOW as soon as the army had no more people to slay or to plunder, because there remained none to be the objects of their fury, (for they would not have spared any, had there remained any other work to be done,) Caesar gave orders that they should now demolish the entire city and temple, but should leave as many of the towers standing as were of the greatest eminency; that is, Phasaelus, and Hippicus, and Mariamne; and so much of the wall as enclosed the city on the west side. This wall was spared, in order to afford a camp for such as were to lie in garrison, as were the towers also spared, in order to demonstrate to posterity what kind of city it was, and how well fortified, which the Roman valor had subdued; but for all the rest of the wall, it was so thoroughly laid even with the ground by those that dug it up to the foundation, that there was left nothing to make those that came thither believe it had ever been inhabited. This was the end which Jerusalem came to by the madness of those that were for innovations; a city otherwise of great magnificence, and of mighty fame among all mankind.

- At this also my heart trembleth, and is moved out of his place. 2 Hear attentively the noise of his voice, and the sound that goeth out of his mouth. 3 He directeth it under the whole heaven, and his lightning unto the ends of the earth. 4 After it a voice roareth: he thundereth with the voice of his excellency; and he will not stay them when his voice is heard. 5 God thundereth marvellously with his voice; great things doeth he, which we cannot comprehend. Job 37:1-5

- And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God: Ephesians 6:17

- And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God. Revelation 19:15
And how about the lightning in the New Testament?
In the New testament Prophecy:
Lighting - refers to one and the same meaning of Greek word “as-trap-say” as “bright shining”.
- For as the lightning cometh out of the east, and shineth even unto the west; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. Matthew 24:27
- His countenance was like lightning, and his raiment white as snow: Matthew 28:3
- And he said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven. Luke 10:18
Here, the phrase “HIS LIGHTNING” from the Old Testament becomes “AS LIGHTNING or LIKE LIGHTNING” in the New Testament. - For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness; Rom 1:18
- For these be the days of vengeance, that all things which are written may be fulfilled. Luke 21:22
- In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ: 2 Thessalonians 1:8
- For we know him that hath said, Vengeance belongeth unto me, I will recompense, saith the Lord. And again, The Lord shall judge his people. Hebrews 10:30
- Even as Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire. Jude 1:7
In the New Testament Fulfillment:
- And out of the throne proceeded lightnings and thunderings and voices: and there were seven lamps of fire burning before the throne, which are the seven Spirits of God. Revelation 4:5
- And there were voices, and thunders, and lightnings; and there was a great earthquake, such as was not since men were upon the earth, so mighty an earthquake, and so great. Revelation 16:18
- And the temple of God was opened in heaven, and there was seen in his temple the ark of his testament: and there were lightnings, and voices, and thunderings, and an earthquake, and great hail. Revelation 11:19

- Genesis 19:24 Then the LORD rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the LORD out of heaven;
